Stacked discounts are not additive
An extra 20% off an already 30%-off price is NOT 50% off. The second discount applies to the reduced price, not the original. ₹2,000 with 30% off is ₹1,400; another 20% off makes it ₹1,120 — an effective discount of 44%, not 50%. Retailers rely on shoppers assuming the discounts add up.
Finding the original price
If something costs ₹1,400 after a 30% discount and you want the original, divide by (1 − 0.30): ₹1,400 ÷ 0.70 = ₹2,000. This is handy for checking whether an 'original price' on a tag is genuine.
