How it works

Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + VAT%)

Remove VAT: Net = Gross / (1 + VAT%)

VAT amount = Gross − Net

Example

$1,000 net + 20% VAT = $1,200 gross ($200 VAT). To extract VAT from $1,200 gross: $1,200 / 1.20 = $1,000 net.

Quick answers

Short, sourced answers to the questions people (and AI assistants) ask most.

What is VAT?
A VAT calculator adds Value Added Tax to a net price, or extracts the VAT and net amount from a VAT-inclusive (gross) price.
Why does VAT matter?
Tax changes your real take-home or net return, so ignoring it overstates results.
How is VAT calculated?
To add VAT: VAT = net × rate%, gross = net + VAT. To remove VAT from an inclusive price: net = gross × 100 ÷ (100 + rate), and VAT = gross − net. Formula: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100) | Net (from gross) = Gross × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate).
What is a good vat?
The UK standard rate is 20%; EU member states range roughly 17%–27%, with reduced rates for some goods. The correct rate depends on the product category and country.
What are common vat mistakes?
Treating an inclusive price as exclusive — removing VAT is not the same as subtracting the rate.
When should you use the VAT Calculator?
Use it to price goods inclusive of VAT, to back out the net from a receipt, or to check an invoice.

What is the VAT Calculator?

A VAT calculator adds Value Added Tax to a net price, or extracts the VAT and net amount from a VAT-inclusive (gross) price.

How the VAT Calculator works

To add VAT: VAT = net × rate%, gross = net + VAT. To remove VAT from an inclusive price: net = gross × 100 ÷ (100 + rate), and VAT = gross − net.

Gross = Net × (1 + Rate ÷ 100) | Net (from gross) = Gross × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate)

Understanding the inputs

What each value means, why it matters, and a typical range — so you can fill in the calculator with confidence.

Tax Rate

The percentage of income, profit or a purchase that goes to tax.

Why it matters:
Tax changes your real take-home or net return, so ignoring it overstates results.
Typical range:
Income tax bands commonly range from 0% to about 45% depending on income and country.
How it affects results:
  • Higher: Less money kept after tax.
  • Lower: More money kept after tax.

Common mistake: Confusing your marginal rate (on the next dollar) with your effective (average) rate.

Worked example

£100 net at 20% VAT: VAT £20 → gross £120. Reverse: £120 inclusive at 20% → net £100, VAT £20.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating an inclusive price as exclusive — removing VAT is not the same as subtracting the rate.
  • Applying the standard rate to reduced-rate or zero-rated goods.
  • Using the wrong country's rate.

I built a free mortgage calculator that works instantly in the browser — no signup, no ads in your face
Body
Hey r/[subreddit],

I kept needing a quick mortgage calculator and most options online were slow or behind paywalls, so I built one that:

• Runs 100% in your browser (your data never leaves your device)
• No signup, no email wall, no popups
• Loads in under a second on mobile

It covers the standard mortgage use cases (mortgage, home, loan, payment) and links out to the formula + worked examples if you want to learn the math.
