How it works
Hourly Rate = (Target Income + Business Expenses) / (Billable Hours per Year)
Billable hours = weeks worked × hours per week × billable %.
Example
Target $80,000 + $15,000 expenses ÷ (48 weeks × 30 hrs × 70%) = $95,000 / 1,008 hrs ≈ $94/hr.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't 100% of my time billable?+
Admin, sales, learning, and breaks all eat into your time. 60–75% billable is typical for solo freelancers.
Should I charge hourly or per project?+
Use hourly to find your baseline, then quote projects in flat fees so you're paid for value, not time.
